Fitness & wellness app development cost

A fitness app with content, logging and progress tracking costs $60,000 to $125,000 to build in the US. A production app with video classes, wearable sync, subscriptions and social features runs $145,000 to $310,000. A coaching platform with live sessions and human trainers passes $350,000. Content production is a separate budget from engineering and is the one people forget.

Popular apps in fitness & wellness

8 recognisable products in this sector, each with a full cost breakdown: what it would take to build something of the same shape in the US today, itemised in engineering hours. Filter by type, complexity or platform.

These are reference points, not clients or endorsements. Each page prices building a product of that shape from scratch — it does not describe what the named company spent, earns or runs on.

Why fitness & wellness software costs what it does

The things that move the number in this vertical, which are usually not the features.

Content production, which is not engineering

A workout or meditation library is filmed, edited and maintained. That budget is real and sits entirely outside a development estimate — teams routinely forget it and then have an app with nothing in it.

Wearable and health integration

HealthKit and Health Connect are each 40–80 hours done properly, including permissions, background delivery, unit handling and reconciling the same workout arriving from two sources. Watch companion apps are a separate target.

Retention mechanics

Streaks, challenges, social feeds and leaderboards are what make the difference between a subscription that renews and one that does not, and they are real engineering rather than configuration.

Realities to plan around

  • Consumer fitness data is generally outside HIPAA — until you sell to an employer health plan, an insurer or a provider, at which point you are in scope and the data model needs to have anticipated it.
  • App store commission of 15–30% on subscriptions materially changes unit economics; many products acquire on the web and treat the app as the consumption surface.
  • Offline download for video matters more here than in most verticals, because people work out where there is no signal.
  • Churn is the entire business problem, so analytics and lifecycle messaging are core rather than optional.

Fitness & wellness cost, answered

How much does it cost to build a fitness & wellness app in the US?

It depends far more on scope than on the sector, and quoting a single figure here would be the least useful thing this page could do. What fitness & wellness does decide is the floor: 4 compliance regimes may apply, you will be asked to integrate with roughly 6 systems of record, and 5 distinct roles typically touch the workflow — all of that before a single feature. The calculator below is already set to this sector; answer the rest and it returns a cost range, hours, timeline, team and running costs for your own scope.

Is health data in a fitness app subject to HIPAA?

Usually not. HIPAA covers providers, health plans and their business associates — a direct-to-consumer fitness app is normally outside it. That changes the moment you sell to an employer health plan or an insurer, integrate with a provider, or handle data on their behalf. Decide your target market before designing the data model, because building with HIPAA controls costs far less than adding them to a live product with existing users.

How accurate is this estimate?

It is a planning estimate, not a quote. The band shown is roughly plus or minus 15–20% for a well-defined scope, and wider while requirements are still moving. It is built from engineering hours per discipline, converted at our blended delivery rate, so the hours are directly comparable to a real proposal line by line — but a firm price needs a technical specification, which is the step after budgeting.

Does this include hosting and maintenance?

No, deliberately. The headline figure is one-off development cost. Monthly cloud infrastructure, metered vendor fees and annual maintenance are calculated separately and shown alongside it, because they are recurring operating costs rather than capital build cost. Adding them together produces a number that means nothing.
